Oh Chang Yoon 오창윤

The pale December sun picks out the detail in the characteristic dry stone walls built of lava which rim all the fields of Jeju island as we search through a network of small rural roads for Gasi village where we are looking for the studio of Oh Chang Yoon. Passing bright green radish fields and citrus groves heavy with golden fruit we arrive at a low wood and stone structure with a slightly domed thatch roof tied down with woven grass ropes. This idyllic corner of Korea’s favorite vacation island is where Oh Chang Yoon and his wife Kang Yoon Sil, who is also a potter, have settled to raise a family far from the hustle and bustle of Korean contemporary life. Designing and building the studio himself while pursuing his Ph.D. at distant Dankook University and lecturing at Jeju University, Oh Chang Yoon has still managed to produce an impressive body of work centered around sensitive interpretations of traditional tea ware.

As a child on his native Jeju island he had always wanted a career as an artist even though his parents pushed for a more practical career. Supported in his choice by an older brother who is now an industrial designer, he entered Jeju University and encountered clay. After receiving his bachelors degree from Jeju University he went to Dankook University in Seoul because their ceramics program is oriented towards traditional ceramics. In the course of designing and building his studio with its attached tearoom he also designed and constructed the interior wooden furniture which garnered a gold prize at a craft competition in 2006. This multitalented young potter has chosen to pursue a quiet path to contemporary ceramics by living in rural peace and reexamining traditional functional forms to fit them into the 21st century.
